An optional half-day tour to visit Himdag Ki: the Tohono O’odham Nation’s beautiful new cultural center and museum in Topawa, Arizona, with its spectacular architecture and breathtaking view of the sacred Baboquivari Peak. Members of the Tohono O’odham Nation will guide the group through the museum and elders’ center and will discuss the nation’s cultural preservation programs. The $15 million museum is an architectural gem, featuring native building materials, and employing traditional features throughout. The beautiful exterior landscaping features a native plant palette, with a focus on medicinal herbs and plants gathered for traditional native foods. The museum is approximately 70 miles from Tucson, a one hour and 15 minute drive through the reservation, which should be beautiful following abundant summer rains.
On our return trip from the visit to Himdag Ki: the tour will make a brief stop at San Xavier del Bac Mission, established by Jesuit explorer Father Eusebio Kino in the early 1700s for the Tohono O’odham people. The mission still functions as the parish church for the San Xavier District of the Tohono O’odham Nation. After the Jesuit expulsion, Franciscans developed the mission and in late 18th century erected a truly remarkable church, with cloister, residence, and private chapel. San Xavier del Bac is one of the architectural treasures of the United States. Its amazing interior paintings, sculptures, and bas reliefs are considered among the finest in the Southwest and have recently been cleaned and restored by experts from Italy, who trained members of the T. O. nation in restoration – now experts in the field of restoration themselves.
