Job Listing: Production Assistant at the George Washington Papers

The Papers of George Washington documentary editing project at the University of Virginia is seeking to hire a full-time Production Assistant to prepare each letterpress volume index in collaboration with that volume’s editor. This work involves careful reading of each volume as it is prepared; identification and indexing of people, places, things and other categories; and preparation and indexing of sub-headings and sub-sub-headings according to our project templates. Work is to be carried out collaboratively with volume editors in the CINDEX indexing system. The production assistant also will work extensively with project editors to improve the digital cumulative index, and may assist in copy editing letterpress volumes or performing historical research as required. Strict adherence to deadlines for completion is essential.

Required: a Bachelor’s degree in history or a related field; experience in academic publishing or indexing; skills in organization, planning, editing, proofreading, research, and computing; and attention to detail and ability to work with deadlines.

Preferred: a Master’s degree or higher in history or a related field; experience in indexing, copy editing, documentary editing, and eighteenth-century history.
