Job announcement – Associate Editor, South Dakota State Historical Society Research and Publishing Office

The South Dakota State Historical Society Research and Publishing Office is looking for a talented individual to become its full-time associate editor on a team that produces an award-winning journal and books and manages the Pioneer Girl Project, a research and publication initiative that explores the working career of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

This person will help manage all South Dakota Historical Society Press book and journal publications. Specifically, he or she will manage book and/or quarterly journal production schedules; edit and verify content for publication; coordinate acquisition of materials from authors, illustrators, map makers, graphic designers, printers, and indexers; and prepare projects for printing, delivery, and subsequent sale by the Press. The associate editor also confirms contract and copyright compliance, solicits reviews, and assures that finished products meet the organization’s publication and production standards. The incumbent must work on site in Pierre and be willing to undertake some travel.

Qualifications:
Must have an undergraduate degree in history, English, or related field and some experience in publishing. Expertise in English grammar and familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), Chicago Manual of Style and AP style books are also necessary. An advanced degree in the above subject areas and two years of experience in editing strongly preferred. Also strongly preferred are familiarity with American history, proven experience with editing methods and standards, and command of Adobe Photoshop.

This person should be able to analyze and evaluate research data and internal structures of written material; read and extract information from various reference materials and other resources; recognize historical error and solve problems of fact and conjecture through research; communicate effectively with other South Dakota State Historical Society staff and with authors and vendors; think critically; and organize and prioritize multiple, simultaneous editing projects and production schedules.
