Assistant Editor position at Cumberland University

The Papers of Martin Van Buren seeks an assistant editor for a July 2019-June 2020 appointment, with the possibility of extended employment dependent on grant funding. The position will require the editor to catalog, transcribe, annotate, and/or proofread documents for the project, which is producing digital and print editions of approximately 13,000 known Van Buren documents.

Candidate must possess the ability to work both independently and as part of a team; exceptional analytical and organizational skills; and proficiency in reading and comprehending nineteenth-century handwriting.

Qualifications: Master of Arts degree in history or related field (Ph.D. preferred). Experience with documentary editing and/or a research specialty in U.S. politics between 1800 and 1865 will be considered a plus.

The successful hire will be required to be in residence at the project office in Cumberland University’s Vise Library.
