There are still spaces available in the introduction to Digital Scholarly Editing online short course at the London Rare Books School. It runs from 17–19 November. Bookings can be made here.

This 3-day online short course on Digital Scholarly Editing surveys the traditions and principles of scholarly editing and textual scholarship, complemented with training on the fundamentals of creating digital editions. It aims to provide an understanding of the history of editorial practice, including the study of manuscripts, the theory of copy text editing, the sociology of texts, and the decisions relating to textual and contextual apparatus that inform the design of an edition. We will focus on encoding documents in Markdown and in XML using the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) guidelines. Students will also learn about HTML, CSS, and publishing options.

The aim of this short course is to combine the how of editing with the why, as well as the pragmatic functions of editions in the digital space, emphasizing thinking tools in addition to technological ones.

This blended course consists of three sessions. Each session will consist of a variety of asynchronous learning activities – pre-recorded video lectures, visual aids, readings, quizzes, tutorials, and exercises – complemented by live seminar sessions delivered over Zoom, from 14.00-15.30 GMT. Asynchronous materials will be released to students a week before the course begins.

Courses fees are £175 (standard) and £100 (student).
