June 21, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

Presenter: Dr. Raffaele (Raff) Viglianti (University of Maryland)

This 1.5-hour workshop will introduce attendees to methods and techniques to publish online a simple digital edition, based on the approaches adopted by ADE’s Scholarly Editing journal. The first part of the workshop will provide a brief overview of theories behind editing with and for the digital medium, such as data modeling for textual scholarship with a focus on single-source documentary editing. It will also engage with issues of digital publishing, longevity, and access. In its second, hands-on, part, the workshop will introduce a selection of tools that reflect the methodologies previously introduced. This part will be longer in order to allow attendees to try these tools on their own laptop. Attendees will download a provided website template including a Text Encoding Initiative XML file. The workshop will introduce basic TEI encoding with a focus on documentary editing and will guide participants through adjusting the appearance of their digital edition, speculate on interactive features, and conclude by publishing the website template online.

Since the conference will be virtual, attendees will be expected to join the workshop from a laptop or desktop computer. They will need to be able to install new software on this computer and they will be provided with a list of software to install before the workshop. Depending on the number of participants, there may be breakout groups to give the opportunity to work together and problem-solve collaboratively. Two or three pre-session readings will be provided as well, for example Sahle, 2016. “What is a Scholarly Digital Edition?” in Digital Scholarly Editing: Theories and Practices. Ed. M.J Driscoll and E. Pierazzo. And a selection from Gil, Alex, & Ortega, Elika. 2016. Global Outlooks in Digital Humanities: Multilingual Practices and Minimal Computing. In Crompton, C. (Ed.) Doing Digital Humanities Practice, Training, Research.
