Position Announcement: Project Director(s), Association for Documentary Editing, Education Program

Candidate Search:  The ADE is undertaking a national search for an individual or team to serve as Project Director(s) of the ADE’s education program for the next three years.  The Director(s) will be responsible for the vision, development, and implementation of the ADE’s education program.  Please provide a cover letter, strategic plan for development and implementation of the education program (addressing all four areas), and CVs for all applicants.  For team applications, please outline how the budget would be structured.

Position Description: The Project Director(s), under the supervision of the president and Council, and in consultation with NHPRC staff, has responsibility for the vision, development, and implementation of the ADE’s education program, specifically the Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents (IEHD), advanced seminars, collaborative workshops, and web resources.  The Project Director(s) will pursue other initiatives to further the ADE’s education program. The Project Director(s) will, with the ADE treasurer, manage the IEHD budget and regularly report to the ADE president and Council, and to the NHPRC.

This is a contract, part-time position that pays $37,500 per year. The Education Director(s) can work from any location but must be available to travel to the site of the Institute, which changes each year.

The deadline for applications is 11 January 2017.  This position begins 13 February 2017 and ends 31 December 2019, spanning three Institutes for the Editing of Historical Documents.  The successful candidate(s) must be a member of the Association for Documentary Editing at the time of appointment.  Experience in teaching and curriculum development is strongly recommended. Detailed position descriptions

Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents: The Project Director(s) will administer the IEHD, working with the president, Council, and committees of ADE, and with the staff of the NHPRC. Duties include publicizing the IEHD, selecting and orienting faculty, developing Institute materials, handling applications and admissions, making local arrangements, providing on-site administration, conducting evaluations, and preparing grant reports. The Project Director(s) will also work with an advisory board appointed by the president to study the content and teaching methods of the IEHD and recommend changes.

Responsibilities include:

Advanced Seminars: The Project Director(s), in coordination with the president-elect (as conference program chairman), will develop a series of Advanced Seminars and conference sessions to be held in conjunction with the ADE annual meeting. The Project Director(s) will survey the members to determine subjects of interest, publicize the seminars, recruit and orient faculty, handle admissions, provide on-site supervision, and conduct evaluation. The goal of these seminars is to advance the field and prepare participants to understand better how to meet key challenges and to better define, share, and promote emerging best practices.

Collaborative workshops and conference sessions: The Project Director(s), in coordination with the president-elect (as conference program chairman), will develop a series of collaborative workshops and conference sessions to take place over the next three years.  These will focus on basic principles and practices in documentary editing and be offered by ADE members at the annual conferences of organizations whose members will benefit by exposure to documentary editing. Working with the president-elect, the Project Director(s) will identify “partner” organizations, recruit members of ADE to participate, submit proposals, publicize the workshops and conference sessions, and conduct evaluations.

  • Encourage/keep track of held at meetings of other stakeholders
  • Introduce participants to mentor in ADE
  • Provide collaborating organizations with information for their promotional materials
  • Advertise workshops and conference sessions on SEDIT-L and ADE website

Website: The Project Director, working with the IEHD Advisory Board, will also develop materials and resources for the ADE’s website.  The website committee will be available to post information and develop site pages to accommodate these resources.

  • Create tools/instruction on editing basics
  • Post PowerPoints and bibliographies generated for the IEHD
  • Post summaries of the advanced seminar discussions
  • Build a resource of documentary editing syllabi and teaching materials
  • Create general resources on transcription and annotation
  • Disseminate instructional tools
